What's An Aparthotel, And Should You Stay In One?

by Jordan Marshall

There are so many different types of places you can stay when you travel! Hotels and motels have long been options. Some people stay in hostels or in short-term rental homes. There's also another type of housing to consider when you travel: aparthotels. They're not as common as hotels, but they exist in most cities. So, it's worth learning a little more about aparthotels to determine whether one is a good place for you to stay.

What is an aparthotel?

Aparthotels are, as the name suggests, a cross between an apartment and a hotel. They exist in buildings that are set up like apartment buildings. Each unit contains a bedroom or bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and generally also some living space. However, instead of being rented out by the month or by the year, these apartments are rented out by the night or by the week—like you would rent a hotel room. In other words, an aparthotel is an apartment that is rented out like a hotel.

What are the benefits of renting an aparthotel?

The key benefit of renting an aparthotel is that you have lots of space and amenities to enjoy. You don't have to squeeze everything into a single room like you do in a hotel. You get to sleep in an actual bedroom, relax in a living room, and use the bathroom as you would at home. Since most aparthotel units have kitchens, you can also cook for yourself. This one advantage can allow you to save a lot of money on your trip. Cooking each night, rather than going out to eat, will yield plenty of savings.

People also love the privacy that aparthotels offer. There are generally fewer units in aparthotel buildings than in hotels, so you won't have to interact with as many people.

What are the downsides of staying at an aparthotel?

One downfall of the aparthotel is that it generally costs more to rent one than to rent a hotel room. If you're on a really tight budget, this may not be the best option for your vacation. Aparthotels don't always come with the service amenities that hotels come with, either. There isn't usually daily maid service, although someone might come once a week if you book a longer stay. There's not usually a continental breakfast or concierge, either.

Now that you have a better idea of what an aparthotel is, you can decide whether or not staying there is a good choice for you.
